Just about a week and a half after moving house my husband and I went to our first event, the summer ball, here. Although the theme was some US-Midwest/Kentucky Derby/Cowboy type theme, the dress code was formal-below the knee for spouses/mess dress for the soldiers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I didn't have much notice and time to come up with an outfit so I made a dress similar to <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/sweethearts-circle-skirts-and-florals.html" target="_blank">this one</a> for the event and paired it with a knitted/crochet (??) bolero,<a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/tutorial-make-your-own-hair-flowers.html" target="_blank"> me-made hairflowers</a> and some pretty heels. It felt formal enough, was very much me and somewhat even suited the theme, I guess.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/summer%20ball/IMG_2345_zps9aff78c6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/summer%20ball/IMG_2345_zps9aff78c6.png" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;">the official photo</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was a shooting booth, a bucking bronco and a Kentucky Derby booth as entertainment as well as a live country band and DJ plus some gorgeous food. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/summer%20ball/summerball2_zps559fafc2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/summer%20ball/summerball2_zps559fafc2.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And after the bull ride the night took a rather unfortunate turn. My husband hurt his arm so bad we ended it up in A&E to get it checked out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Luckily nothing was broken and he had only pulled a muscle. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Hello from the beach</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
I am back after a few weeks of silence here on the blog. My husband and I have been busy moving house from Berkshire to North Devon. We initially were hoping to be moving back to Germany for a few years but my husband got posted to Devon instead. I was a bit miffed at first because a lot of our plans fell through but now we are here I could not be happier. It's one of the most beautiful areas in the UK I have been to and I still can not believe I get to live here for the next three years. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm going to leave you with a few impressions of our first few outing here, exploring the local area.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Moving%20to%20Devon%20first%20impressions/SauntonSandslowtide_zps350f352e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Moving%20to%20Devon%20first%20impressions/SauntonSandslowtide_zps350f352e.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Saunton sands, this is the closest beach to us and I love how endlessly long it is. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">We haven't filled up our car since we left Reading two weeks ago as you can cycle everywhere around here. I love it!</span></div>

well..............almost.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A little over a week ago one of my husbands colleagues asked us if we would fancy joining him for a day in London to the<a href="http://www.bst-hydepark.com/" target="_blank"> British Summer Time concert series in Hyde Park</a>. It sounded like a good idea especially since the tickets were free to us from Ticket for Troops. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/Hydepark_zps03b544e1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/Hydepark_zps03b544e1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the way to Hyde park, we passed Downing Street and our friend Lewis suggested we see if we can get in for a picture. Perk number two, soldiers and police get through the gate to the front door. So we got our picture. Mr. Cameron was out watching Murray win Wimbledon. I guess that's OK on a Sunday ;-) especially considering the outcome.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/OutsideNumber10DowningStreet_zps77a42c54.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/OutsideNumber10DowningStreet_zps77a42c54.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/10DowningStreet_zpsa198b9cf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/10DowningStreet_zpsa198b9cf.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After that we made our way to Hyde Park. I hadn't checked the line up as I was told the Saturdays and JLS were playing amongst others, which I am not at all interested in seeing ever but as I said, the tickets were free, the company was fun and we didn't have anything better to do. Once we got there I found out that the Beach Boys, or who's left of them, were playing, too. That of course got me interested and I made my way to the main stage to see some legends perform. They played all the classics and a few new songs. Amazing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/beachboyshydepark_zpsc3167e5b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/beachboyshydepark_zpsc3167e5b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I spend the rest of the time enjoying Pimms for the first time ever. It was love at first sip. It's a bit sad that it took me 6 years in the UK to finally try it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/IMG_2168_zps266b13e4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Beach%20boys%20and%20number%2010%20Downing%20dtreet/IMG_2168_zps266b13e4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Is there anything typically British I might have not tried yet? I would hate to miss out on something yummy.</div>

I have been swamped with work last week (read: sewing for other people last week- no complaints!!!) and with my husband off work, moving house in about 2 weeks from now and the most glorious weather sewing for myself was abandoned for the last week or so. I have a few projects line up though. </div>

<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58953_zps6265b3cf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58953_zps6265b3cf.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="http://butterick.mccall.com/b5895-products-44972.php?page_id=4500" target="_blank">butterick 5895</a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After seeing <a href="http://luckylucille.com/2013/06/gerties-new-pattern-for-better-pants/" target="_blank">Rochelle's version of this pattern</a> I knew I had to get it and have a go myself. I was in need of some capris for the summer as I only own a pair of boring black ones. I found a dusky pink stretch denim at my local fabric shop and decided to make up my first pair of capris in that fabric and the blouse in a red gingham. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58952_zps091384e4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58952_zps091384e4.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There isn't too much to say about the pattern. The capris are super easy and quick to whip up. If you are scared of making trousers/pants, try these first. They are only front and back piece plus waistband, so even if you have fitting issues for some reason there are only very few pieces to wrestle with. As Rochelle mentioned in her blog post about this pattern, sizing comes up huge due to too much ease so be aware of that. I cut a smaller size against the sizing chart and went with the finished measurements on the pattern pieces instead to avoid having to fit MC Hammer pants to capri size. Worked a treat, no adjustments were necessary. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58951_zps0621688e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/gerties%20capris%20and%20blouse/gertiescapricpantsandblousebutterick58951_zps0621688e.jpg" width="206" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The top is relatively straight forward, too. Some might find the collar a little fiddly but once you have figured that out you'll be knocking load of them up as it's such a nice little cropped top. I don't usually go for cropped anything but with high waisted trousers, skirts or of course on the beach this isn't too belly bearing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: x-small;">silly pose, had to be done....</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will be making more tops from this pattern, probably in more gingham. I need more gingham in my life. I think it will be super cute with shorts to make a little playsuit, don't you think?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/null_zps09e00804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/null_zps09e00804.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love hair flowers, especially in the summer. They instantly make me happy as they add another splash of colour to an outfit and glamourise any hairstyle in an instant. So I decided to make myself a whole bunch of them in different colours to go with some of my dresses. Its a fun, quick and easy projects and also makes great gifts. Since the UK summer is a total hit and miss, I would recommend this as a rainy day project. If you live in the UK you should have about 9465723920 by the end of this summer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiyutensils_zps360d5803.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiyutensils_zps360d5803.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What you need: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As a selection of fake flowers of your choice. I got most of mine from Wilkinsons. They were between £1.50 and £2.50 a bunch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
pin curl clips (preferably the ones with little holes in them), plain hair combs I got both at Wilkinsons as well but I'm sure any drugstore or beauty supply place will stock them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and some matching thread.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>How to: Dahlia haircomb</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy1_zps2ba95450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="185" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy1_zps2ba95450.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Take three flowers and the leaves of the bunch and take out the plastic pollen center that holds the flower together, also take out the plastic from the leaves so you are left with the softer pedals and leaves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy2_zpsecfd2589.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy2_zpsecfd2589.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Arrange them to your liking and carefully stitch them together using matching threads<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy3_zpsab6f0d61.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/hairflowerdiy3_zpsab6f0d61.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Attach to the comb and you are done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/null_zpseb755ec7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/null_zpseb755ec7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was wearing this flower piece on Saturday's charity shopping adventure.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<b>How to: Chrysanthemum clip</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
I used three flowers for this and some of the leaves and removed all plastic centers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/peonyhairflowerdiy1_zps00d476ab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w611/BeatriceWinter/Vintage%20inspired%20hairflower%20diy/peonyhairflowerdiy1_zps00d476ab.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div>
Layer all pedals on top of another for a nice full blossom and stitch in place<br />

</div>
<div>
and add the green underneath. I placed the leaves a little towards one side so the would peak out a little.<br />
sew onto the clip<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin: 0px;">
And you have a pretty, full blossom hair clip</div>

I was wearing that with a low bun on Sunday to go with my <a href="http://vintageinspiredclothingbybeatricewinter.bigcartel.com/product/1950s-inspired-sun-dress">Betty Draper tulip dress</a>.<br />

I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. If you give it a try, please let me know and show me a picture of your new hair accessory. Happy flowermaking!!</div>

Lately I have been looking forward to the weekends even more than usual, mainly because it means outdoor fun with the husband preferably on a bicycle. We decided to cycle to Fleet today and go on a charity shop tour. There are loads of charity shops in Fleet and it's a somewhat decent cycling distance away. I took the Schwinn cruiser which meant I got to dress nicely.</div>

I have a pair in light denim already (never photographed and blogged) which I have worn a lot. It's my lazy-can't-be-bothered-to-make-an-effort pair of jeans. When I saw this dark lightweight denim at my local fabric shop and I thought I should make another pair that is a little dressier. So here they are. </div>

As if I sensed the news to come when I made them last week....I'm in need of more nautical fashions. I am moving to the UK's south-west coast soon. My husband just found out on Monday where we will be posted to next. We were hoping to move back to Germany for a few years but instead we are being transferred to Devon. I was a bit disappointed for a second as I would have loved living closer to my family and friends again, at least for a while. But on second thought, living close to the seaside in one of the most beautiful areas in the UK really isn't too bad. In fact I am now very much looking forward to the move. Please message me if you are living anywhere in the the area. I'd like to meet some local sewing buddies, vintage enthusiast or sport fanatics.</div>

My husband and I spend this weekend indulging in one of our favourite activities, cycling. We went on a 60 mile bike ride on Saturday and a lazy afternoon ice cream run and stroll through Wokingham on Sunday. I have always enjoyed cycling on my Schwinn beach cruiser, wearing cute outfits and getting from A to B but whenever I saw road cyclists out on their bikes I never understood what they like about road cycling. It always seemed boring to me. Obviously road cycling is a hug part of triathlon, so it was inevitable for me to start cycling on a performance bike. It took me a few rides to kind of get into it as it's not the most comfortable experience at first and you really need to "break in" your rear end. It also doesn't allow for cute outfits, it's padded tights or shorts and tech shirts plus helmet....not so pretty. But let me tell you, going down a hill at 32 miles/hour is an awesome experience and the ground you can cover on a bike like that is amazing. I admit I'm very torn between pretty cycling and badass cycling now. So this weekend we decided to dedicate a day to each kind. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Our Saturday ride took us from Wokingham to Reading, Maidenhead,Windsor, Eton, Windsor Park Ascot, Bracknell and back home. 60 miles total, that's a lot of cake and cider for me. You've got to reward yourself for all that work, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I slept very well that night, I guess passed out until late morning is the correct term. After lunch we decided to cycle into Wokingham again for some ice cream. This time I took Betty Schwinn and got to dress a little nicer. The shorts are my own creation from 2 years ago, still going strong. </div>

I have been making a lot of dresses featuring full gathered skirts or circle skirts lately and thought it was time for a different design. In <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/sweethearts-circle-skirts-and-florals.html">one of my latest dress posts</a> I was toying with the idea of using my sweet heart bodice in combination with a pencil skirt and so I did. I used a black cherry print cotton and the result is a cute little wiggle dress. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think if I use this design again, I will make the skirt slightly longer. It's not too short but shorter than I usually wear. I also have this fabric in white waiting to be made up into something. Not sure what it's going to be yet. Any ideas?</div>

It's time for part three on how I got into running and finally multi sport. You find <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/another-passion-of-minehow-i-got-into.html">part one</a> and <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/about-my-other-passionhow-i-got-into_16.html">part two</a> of this series here. For the first three years of running I was kind off training in phases. I would train for a few months, book a race and then once the race was over I would loose interest. So for a few weeks I wouldn't run and then get to the point where I felt my fitness slipping away. Then I would usually get back into it, feeling frustrated with having to take a few steps back and rebuild the fitness/endurance I had lost.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
As mentioned in previous running post in 2010/2011 my husband went on tour to Afghanistan for six month over the autumn /winter months and I was left with lots of free time by myself. I was also made redundant at the time. I picked up running again to get out of the house and try to avoid the winter blues that way. I felt like I needed a new goal, something to focus on and decided that maybe I should attempt training for a half marathon. So I did, however for some reason I never booked a race. So I was training with no race day ahead and eventually burnt out or lost interest, I can't really remember. My husband and I also did a lot of travelling once he got back from tour and in that time I wasn't running too much. I learnt a lot from this experience though. I learned that I need a goal, a race and a strategy. You can't just consistently build up and increase distance or intensity or both.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00166-1_zps9bcc7e6f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00166-1_zps9bcc7e6f.jpg" width="432" /></a></div>
<br />
We moved to the outskirts of Reading in January 2012 due to a course my husband was/still is taking here. I revisited the idea of running a half marathon. I picked the Bracknell half in April and used a runners world training plan to prepare. I also ran a 10k in Winchester as part of my preparation and really enjoyed following this plan, seeing progress as time went past. The actual race was great, although I had a cold on the day and got soaking wet as it was raining all day. You can read all about that race <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/i-got-soaked.html">here</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00602-1_zps138b7ff5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00602-1_zps138b7ff5.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Totally soaked and exhausted after my first half marathon</span><br />
<br />
Once I had bagged that half marathon I felt like I really enjoyed the longer distances and started toying with the idea of running a full marathon. You know just one to cross it of the bucket list. I found the Abingdon marathon in November and signed myself and my husband up for it. We didn't get into the race because it was full and had to stay on the waiting list in case a space became available. I thought, who is going to drop out of a marathon? I couldn't find any other marathons for that year and decided to sign up for Brighton 2013 instead. I love Brighton and running there would be amazing.<br />
But then in July I got the news that we had made it into the Abingdon race, hooray!!, and training began. I tell you it's hard work training for a marathon throughout summer. (maybe not this year as there isn't even Spring weather apart from like 3 days scattered over the past months) If you want to train for a full marathon I would advise booking a Spring race instead of an autumn one.<br />
<br />
In November 2012 my hubby and I ran <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/i-ran-marathon.html">our first full marathon.</a> It was his first 26.2mi /42.2km, too. I am so lucky my husband is so supportive. He does his own training and trotts along with me on long runs, which must be so boring as I am A LOT slower than him.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/716C4BAB-4CF4-4CDD-B644-E62D131A4025-2031-000001ABF45CC5F0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/716C4BAB-4CF4-4CDD-B644-E62D131A4025-2031-000001ABF45CC5F0.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">after my first marathon</span><br />
<br />
I was in A LOT OF PAIN for about a week after running this race. On the first day I could not even get up from the sofa by myself. My husband had to lift me into a standing position. I had to physically lift my legs to turn around in bed and I had to go up and down the stairs on my bum. It was bad!!! But it got better and I knew I would do this again. Well, I did about <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/running-brighton-marathon.html">six month later in Brighton.</a> The days after were painful again but not as much as the first time. The human body is an amazing thing and adapts well to stress and only ends up being stronger.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
I also ran a 10 miler and two more half marathons in 2012 and realised that I am much more consistent with my running if I keep setting goals and have events booked along the way. After running my first full marathon, I felt like I can do anything I set my heart to. If I don't know how, I can learn it or train and practise for it but whatever I want to achieve, I can achieve. So after having conquered the almighty marathon, I knew I would not go any further than that. I am not interested in ultra running (yet, who knows what my crazy side will set my mind to in the future).<br />
And that is what sparked the idea of triathlon but more about that next time.<br />
<br />
Are any of you running any races in the near future? I know <a href="http://porcelinasworld.blogspot.co.uk/">Porcelina</a> is running her first 10k soon. You should head over to <a href="http://porcelinasworld.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/running-in-pink-trainers.html">her blog</a> and wish her good luck.<br />

I ventured off from my usual floral dress creations with this dress. This car print fabric called for a relatively simple design and the pale pink colour for a very summery style.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I went for a simple fitted bodice and added a halter strap because I'm not a huge fan of completely strapless. The skirt is a simple gathered dirndl style. Fortunately I finished this dress before that one sunny day of the past couple weeks we've had and got to wear it. I wonder if there will be one more change for a dress like that this year. I'm kind off loosing hope for a descent Summer with a lame spring like we had here in the UK :-(</div>

I added a little bow to the neckline for some extra detail. I hope you've had some more chances to wear your summer dresses yet. </div>

Check out The Amazings.......<div style="text-align: center;">
A few weeks ago I was contacted by<a href="http://www.theamazings.com/"> The Amazings, </a>an organisation where retiring or retired people pass on their skills and knowledge in workshops and classes and currently offer about 200 real life courses.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because their classes have been so successful, <a href="http://www.theamazings.com/">The Amazings</a> are now branching out into online classes everyone can take part in, in their own time, revisit and retake as often as they like.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was asked if I was interested in checking out their website and trying a class currently available. Since I am always interested in learning new things, I jumped at the chance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are currently 8 online classes available with more being added every week. There is no charge to join the site but the classes themselves range in price from £8 to £20.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to try out the <a href="http://www.theamazings.com/online_activities/2">retro hair do</a> class as this is a subject I am always experimenting with and want to learn more about. The retro hair do course is £12 and for that you receive </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
video tutorials for three vintage hairstyles with a modern twist. They are not authentic vintage but rather vintage inspired. A very charming and wonderful teacher Michael, who is a hairdresser and knows his craft, explains step by step how to recreate each style and provides tips and tricks alongside the videos like little "hand-me-outs" You can also communicate with fellow classmates and Michael, in case you feel like you need more information and help.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzDhx8C1dIWJIgLAm2oDTtFz7HsMoZglvx-C1T3KBQ4z1Vz15LRXcqVwQ-ZvyDySdymBC2PP6lkR_5cqXN-XQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Michael is very sweet and seems to love his profession as a hair stylist. You can tell he is very enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about what he is doing. I recommend watching all three videos first before getting started on your own hair. The setting of the hair is very similar for all three styles and is shown in each individual video. Michael explains a few extra bits in each video which will be useful, especially for people new to vintage hair styling. If you only watch one video at a time, trying to recreate a style you might miss a few bits of information for a successful finish. What I like is that Michael gives a few tips on what products to use and how. I also liked his little stories very much. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, how did I do?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/theamazingshairsetting_zps850bb0a6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="568" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/theamazingshairsetting_zps850bb0a6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">setting my hair, it pretty much looked the same for all three styles</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to have a go at all three hairstyles to see if you really can recreate them all by yourself with the help of this course. You will need a set of hot rollers for all three hair dos. Michael explains and shows how to roll and set your hair.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/1930schignon_zps083c7270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/1930schignon_zps083c7270.jpg" width="552" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first style is a 1930s inspired chignon to one side of the head. I really liked that style on the model and hers is a hair do I have not previously tried. (sorry I don't have a picture of her) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Style number two, rockabilly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/RetroHairDo2_zps1a6b2836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/RetroHairDo2_zps1a6b2836.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/RetroHairDo1_zps8dad0024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/RetroHairDo1_zps8dad0024.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="http://www.theamazings.com/online_activities/2/classroom/overview">The Amazings</a> version (pictures The Amazings)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/rockabillystyle_zpsd617030e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/rockabillystyle_zpsd617030e.jpg" width="620" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">my version</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/rockabilly1_zps1423f43e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="528" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/rockabilly1_zps1423f43e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The rockabilly inspired style. I'm not 100% into this do. It's a more messy take on the quiff and I prefer more sleek looks for myself. It did however turn out pretty much like the hair style on the model.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The third style is a 1960s Bridget Bardot inspired beehive. I love this style but I'm not sure it suits me that well. I haven't got layered hair so I had to tuck the front of my hair to the sides.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/medium_retrohair_hero_3_zps055b50af.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/medium_retrohair_hero_3_zps055b50af.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="http://www.theamazings.com/online_activities/2">The Amazings</a> model, isn't she gorgeous? <a href="http://www.theamazings.com/online_activities/2">source</a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thebeehive_zps5bb9d18f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thebeehive_zps5bb9d18f.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">and this is my version</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thebeehive1_zps9b8f6d3d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thebeehive1_zps9b8f6d3d.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My verdict: I really like the idea of <a href="http://www.theamazings.com/">The Amazings</a>. I would like to try a real life class in the future and see what they are like. The online class format reminds me a bit of the <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/">Craftsy</a> courses. I have never taken a craftsy class so I wont know if they actually are similar or not but the concept seems to be. If <a href="http://www.theamazings.com/">The Amazings</a> keep doing what they are doing and add to their repertoire, I can't see why they won't become as popular. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As far as the online class goes, I think it is a great class for people who want to try out some retro hair dos. The ways they are styled are very much geared at all girls and women who like a bit of a hair do that stands out from the mass, not necessarily just for vintage and retro enthusiasts. The video tutorials are easy to follow and guide you to a satisfying result. Beginners might have to have a few goes at using the hot rollers and maybe each hairstyle won't be perfect straight away. But with time and practise, they will get there in no time. I like that you will learn techniques, little tips and tricks on how to do it by yourself (not with a wonderful hair stylist, styling your hair for you) and what products to use.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I would have liked to see an alternative to hot rollers for those people who don't own a set and don't want to buy one just to have a go. But maybe Michael will have an alternative if you contact him via the website for help. I didn't use the interactive possibilities. I also hope the prices will go down with increasing interest. I don't think £12 is too much for a class like that at all but with countless free tutorials on youtube and vimeo etc. there is a lot of competition.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now go and check out The Amazings for yourself, try out a class and see what you think. There is anything from knitting to sewing to diy cosmetics etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Disclaimer: I got to try the online class for free however all opinions are my own.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Last Sunday was finally THE DAY, I would compete in my very first triathlon. This has been a dream of mine for a while now. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will do a post on how I went from just running to multi-sport soon to continue my how-I-got-into-running-posts. Here are<a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/another-passion-of-minehow-i-got-into.html"> part 1</a> and <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/about-my-other-passionhow-i-got-into_16.html">part 2</a> of that series.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was so exited about race day that I already thought the Saturday the weekend before that it was the day of the event. Pretty silly but I guess it helped getting my nerves out of the way. I couldn't sleep and was quite nervous and worried the whole day so when I realised on Sunday morning it was all false alarm and the race wasn't until the following weekend, I was very relieved.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past Sunday started at 4:00 am for me but this time I had gotten some sleep and I was all calm and exited to go. I had all my kit packed the night before and just had to eat, put on my tri-suit and drive to the lake. Registration opened at 5:45 but we didn't get there until 6 am. I registered, racked my bike in the transition area and set up my space: helmet, cycling gloves, shoes, food (gels, water and sports drinks just in case) and a few different shirts in case I needed to wear something over my tri-suit when coming out of the water. As this was my first triathlon, I didn't have a clue whether I would be cold in my wet clothing after the swim.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon_zpsf1cdabea.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon_zpsf1cdabea.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">nervous much?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After setting up I had plenty of time to put on my wetsuit and make my way to the start. All participants got a short race brief and then it was time to go. I like the way the swim was organised. The men younger than 40 went in first, 10 minutes later the 40+ veteran men and then all women at 7:25. The swim is still the part that worries me most and I have heard horror stories of people swimming over other people and it all being a big mess. So with swimming being my weakest discipline and me being afraid to be pushed under I decided to start at the back of the pack. I also had not been in a lake for about 2 weeks so I was a little worried I would have wet suit issues again. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">getting in the lake</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So anyways, once the veterans had taken off for their race, the ladies could get in the water to get acclimatised. I wanted to go in as soon as possible as I had problems adjusting to the cold of the water against my face in previous lake swims. It kind off takes my breath away and makes swimming that much harder. To my surprise the water was a lot warmer than at my previous lake swims and I felt comfortable very quickly. At this point I finally relaxed, forgot about all my anxieties and looked forward to the race. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The swim was so much better than I thought. It took me 20 minutes to swim the 750 m course and I didn't come out of the lake last. That was one of my goals for the day. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon2_zps378713c2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon2_zps378713c2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">the women's swim pack</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon3_zps6ace872e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon3_zps6ace872e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">approaching the end of the swim</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon4_zps35b85f7b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon4_zps35b85f7b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">the hardest part is done</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first transition took me just under 5 minutes. Try to get out of a wetsuit in a hurry, then dry yourself as much as you can and get on some socks and shoes....sounds easy but man, it's hard work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon5_zps95747fc4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon5_zps95747fc4.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon6_zpsfed05f54.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon6_zpsfed05f54.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next onto the bike part, 20 km road cycle. The first thing that happened was that my chain had come off while my bike was racked in transition but a nice marshal guy popped it back on for me while I was getting ready for the cycling. I then took a wrong turn on the course but thankfully realised it after just 100 m or so and then my chain came off again on the course. I managed to get it fixed and finished the cycle after 52 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon7_zps37222f17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon7_zps37222f17.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My second transition was super fast, just about 1 minute 40. I only had to rack my bike, take off my helmet and cycling jacket (I can't believe I wore a cycling jacket....what a newbie I am....it's like dragging a parachute behind) I'm currently not cycling with clip in shoes so I was already wearing my running shoes on the bike and didn't need to change them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took a sip of sports drink and off I went on the 5 km run. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon8_zps9a88d71b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon8_zps9a88d71b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The run was a trail run, which I think I had read before but must have tried to ignore as a fact. It was a very wobbly run on the first kilometre. The uneven ground and my legs having just cycled 20 km as hard as I could, didn't really help but eventually I got into it and finished the run in 28 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon9_zps49e30da5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon9_zps49e30da5.jpg" width="554" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/timechart_zps0272547e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="33" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/timechart_zps0272547e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My total time was 1:45:30 which was about 15 minutes faster that I expected. I was aiming for a sub 2 hour finish but that good??? Who would have thought. Needless to say, I am hooked now and can't wait to do it all over again. I think I lost my last fears of lake swimming that day. I could even imagine going in just a bathing suit now if the water is warm enough. Of course looking at the wonderful?!? English summer we are having here, I won't have to prove that any time soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon10_zps92fa9c12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/thorpetriathlon10_zps92fa9c12.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I must say, the race was very well organised. Everyone I met on the day, organisers, helpers and athletes, were super friendly and encouraging. I wasn't the only newbie there which was nice. And there was no difference being made between the elite and the first timers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The only bummer was, that there were no medals for the finishers. Just a T-shirt :-( I love my medals.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But then I can't find my medal from my first 5 km race either. So no firstie medals in my collection.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do you collect your race medals? Do you do triathlon, running or think about giving any of it a go? If you do, go for it. You will never regret it! EVER!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

And for those who are not bored of floral dresses yet, here is another one. I'm messing around with the pattern of my <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/new-sun-dress-for-bank-holiday.html">"Liverpool dress"</a> at the moment and see what variations I can come up with. If I draft or frankenstein a successful pattern that I like very much, I try and make the most of it. I really like sweetheart necklines so I had to make another dress with that feature. I also like straps or sleeves as they keep the dress up nicely. As much as I like <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/new-sun-dress-for-bank-holiday.html">this style</a>, I feel like I want to pull it up all the time. I mainly get this with strapless dresses, whether they fit or not.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress3_zpsc2b501b0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress3_zpsc2b501b0.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress9_zps23f7c3f0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress9_zps23f7c3f0.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
bodice detail</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress15_zpsa9adcac2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress15_zpsa9adcac2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress13_zps6600d5d9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress13_zps6600d5d9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And this is how I was wearing the dress today. I paired it with a little cropped cardi.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress14_zps4b4fff8a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress14_zps4b4fff8a.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also like it with this black cropped cardi.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress1_zps094fefa7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/Ritafloraldress1_zps094fefa7.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I need to think of another way to use this bodice. Maybe cap sleeves? Or a pencil skirt?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What do you think, any other suggestions?</div>

It's been quiet here last week. I wasn't feeling too well after spending the bank holiday weekend in Liverpool with my husband and his colleagues (plus partners) for their annual get together. So here's the cach up.<br />
We meet once a year somewhere in the UK as all his colleagues he went to Afghanistan with a few years back are now posted all over the place. This is always a fun weekend catching up with everyone. I didn't really take any pictures for the blog but this is what I wore going out the first night.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="center">
The inspiration came from this dress I found on pinterest</div>

I'm sorry I have only crappy phone pictures at the moment but I will definitely wear this again and take some nice ones. I also have this fabric in blue with green florals and might make the same dress in blue as well. I hope the sun is here to aty now and i can wear a dress like that without a cardigan hiding most of its detail.</div>

We spend Sunday afternoon in St Lukes church, which is just a shell now as it was bombed and burned out in the 2nd world war I believe. The church is now used for art exhibitions and as a music venue. Its the most beautiful place to hang out. We kind of stumbled upon this student organised music festival by accident and steyed the whole afternoon, it was that good. <br />

Remember my recent <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/retro-chabby-chic-ottoman-upcycle.html">ottoman upcycling project</a>? Well, I have four ottomans dotted around the house and they are all in need for some TLC and DIY. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/ottomanupcycletwo_zps5b213647.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="460" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/ottomanupcycletwo_zps5b213647.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">before</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This one is in the same room as the first one I did up. I kept within the colour scheme and went for a stripey cover this time. I think I almost like it better that the polka dots. The trim is the same. That's two of them done, two more to go. One in my sewing room and one in the bathroom. I haven't decided on fabrics and paint yet. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I like quick and easy projects like that. Very satisfying.</div>

As I mentioned in my <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/so-i-swam-in-lakekinda-big-deal-for-me.html">previous post</a>, I have been sewing and a new shirt dress to present.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern is another mailorder pattern number 8111 and I am again unsure which pattern company this is. The design is a bit unusual and not something I have made before. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1506_zpsa6fcf771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1506_zpsa6fcf771.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wasn't too sure about the big front button flaps as these details often look quirky in the drawing but then not that great in real life. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made the version in the big picture but forgot the belt loop.Oh well, the belt I ended up wearing with it would have covered it up anyways. It's not the perfect belt to go with it but it's the best I could find in my collection. It's vintage from the1970s.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also shortened the hem by about 5". Not as much as I took off on <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/new-shirt-dress-mailorder-pattern-4882.html">this dress</a> but I kind of like it that length.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The skirt is a four piece skirt again. I do like how they drape but I'm still not a fan of the center seam. I also could have done a better job pressing that seam, looking at this picture.</div>

What do you think: Flappy button details yey or nay? Also what are they really called? </div>

I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful weekend. I definitely had a great one. Actually the whole last week has been very eventful for me. Since I have been writing a lot about the past in my running posts <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/another-passion-of-minehow-i-got-into.html">here</a> and <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/about-my-other-passionhow-i-got-into_16.html">here</a>, I want to share a bit of what I'm currently up to. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Last Tuesday I went for my very first open water swim. This is such a big deal for me that I have to share it with you readers instead of waiting for it to fit into my running/multisport story. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I mentioned in my last post I am currently training for my first sprint triathlon which will be on the 9th of June (not long now!) The whole event will be a 750m swim in a lake, 20k bike ride and 5k run. Now, I only started swimming last September when I enrolled in an adult swim class at a local swimming pool. I built up some strength and stamina since then and swim quite well now. But swimming in a pool and in a lake a very different things. A pool is kept at a comfortable temperature, you can see what's below you and around you (this is not always a good thing though, I must say....pools are gross, even nice ones) and you are always close to something to hold on to in case you need a rest. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1502_zps38e129ee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1502_zps38e129ee.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">How do you like my new look? I wish they did polka dot wet suits...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
None of these things apply in a lake. It's dark, there is stuff living in it that you can't see, it's cold and there are no walls etc to hold on to in case you run out of steam. I am not at all happy with any of those aspects and was super scared of the moment I had to get into a lake and swim. I had pushed this experience as far away as possible but now with the race so close I had to face this last step that kept me from competing in a triathlon. So I went and bought a wetsuit and a trisuit last Monday. I didn't think I would get both items so quickly but I was lucky to live near the warehouse for <a href="http://www.mytriathlon.co.uk/">www.mytriathlon.co.uk</a> and they people there were super helpful and got me sorted out in no time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There is a lake just outside Reading where you can <a href="http://www.mysportingtimes.com/tri20-swim-centre.htm">go open water swimming at the Copthorne hotel</a> on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and weekend mornings. So I took my new kit and my very nervous self to the lake and went in. I also brought my husband along to document the whole event and for moral support. I was very scared of having a panic attack in the lake and having to be saved by "David Hasselhoff in a canoe" (had to mention him as we Germans are always said to be his biggest fans....) and be pulled out of the lake. Fortunately he never had to come and save me. I went in and started swimming pretty much straight away. The swimming itself was VERY bad. I swam like I used to, awful breaststroke, head above water, all over the place (even ended up floating into the banks at some point) and I was very uncomfortable the whole time. The wetsuit was very tight around my neck and felt like it was choking me. But the things I was most afraid of, the dark water, the stuff in the lake and being away from anything to hold on to, didn't really bother me much at all. It's cold at first when the suit fills with water but it warms up very quickly and it keeps you very straight and afloat. Drowning is virtually impossible. So when I ran out of breath (basically every two minutes) I turned on my back and floated until I was ready to swim some more. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I floated on my back a lot on this first swim and took forever to get around the buoys. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The water was very fresh and clean and much nicer than pool water. As you get water in your mouth when swimming, this is much more pleasant. My skin felt great afterwards as well. Not dry and smelling of chlorine as it usually does after a pool swim. So that was great. When I got out of the water I felt like I had just done the most amazing thing ever because I had managed to conquer my fear of swimming in dark open water including all it's "lake monsters" and I didn't panic. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My actual swimming was appalling which crushed my spirit a bit. I thought I was getting kinda good in the pool but this is sooooooo different. It was like learning to swim all over again and on race day I will have to swim almost twice as far. But for now I had managed to get a step further by not freaking out. I know now I can do it and swim in a lake. I don't have to like it, just do it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went back on Saturday morning to have another go. The fact that I am so slow and uncomfortable made me want to have another go as soon as possible. I didn't do the suit up as tight around the neck and pulled legs, arms and torso of the suit up as high as I could to try and avoid the choking feeling as much as possible and it worked. I also realised once the choking feeling was gone that the cold water on my face (lake was 14C) was what took my breath away and made me swim mainly head above water. Once I had acclimatised to the cold, swimming felt so much easier. I managed two 400m laps and felt quite good during the swim. I was also twice as fast as on my first swim. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zps958786ba.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zps958786ba.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">On Saturday morning, feeling so much better after the second swim and all the improvements I had made from the first time. And no, I don't swim with sunglasses on but I wanted to spare you no-make-up-albino-ginger-face. It's not attractive.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"></span><br />
I'm still not in love with lake swimming but I can see myself getting there in the future. I want to treat open water swimming as I treated olives. I used think they were gross and I hated olives. Something made me try them again and again though and now they are a weekly buy for me and go in most of my meals because I really love them. I hope this will happen to my relationship with the lake. Have you ever swam in a lake? Do you like it?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What was the scariest thing that you have ever done? Is there anything you really would like to do but fear is holding you back?</div>

I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful weekend. I definitely did. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did get some sewing done</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1506_zpsa6fcf771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1506_zpsa6fcf771.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Pictures of the finished dress coming soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1555_zps44fab840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1555_zps44fab840.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went for lunch and dog walkies with a friend wearing a new dress. It's basically my <a href="http://www.vintageinspiredclothingbybeatricewinter.bigcartel.com/product/1940s-inspired-land-girl-dress">landgirl dress </a>without the sleeves and in red polka dots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1496_zps8e08aa07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/IMG_1496_zps8e08aa07.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I swam in a lake for the second time, which is a huge deal for me. More on that (first and second time) in tomorrow's post.</div>

And I went on a long bike ride with my husband all day Sunday. </div>

What have you been up to this weekend?</div>

Last Thursday I started sharing my running story with you readers. If you have missed Part 1, <a href="http://horrormaedchen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/another-passion-of-minehow-i-got-into.html">here it is.</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After that very first 5k race I continued training without really setting any other goal than getting better at running and increasing my distance. I ran about 3 times per week for 20-40 min (3-5-ish Kilomerters -about 2-3 miles) and got stronger. I didn't do any other specific running training than just get out of the door and do it. At the early stages improvement is rather easy and you build up quickly. That is great as it keeps you motivated. I also decided to stop smoking, once again. I had tried many times before but this time it stuck and I finally got over it. This is one of the biggest improvements I have made to my lifestyle. I am so happy to have kicked that awful habit for good. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UN2-MIALSYA/S8rTsot3IkI/AAAAAAAAA0I/Cl6Otf7hiNY/s1600/DSC04525.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UN2-MIALSYA/S8rTsot3IkI/AAAAAAAAA0I/Cl6Otf7hiNY/s640/DSC04525.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">from around that time</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I July 2009 my boyfriend and I finally moved in with each other. We both moved to Colchester, where he was posted to for the next 3 years. I loved living there. It is close to the seaside, surrounded by lots of green countryside and about the same size as the place I moved from in Germany. The best part was of course finally living together with my awesome boyfriend.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After moving I had to find a new job as my freelance work wasn't paying well enough and it was hard to do, away from Birmingham. I ended up working in a local wedding dress shop which also led to the rebirth of my sewing and dressmaking hobby. But that's another story.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00273-1_zps157a29c3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00273-1_zps157a29c3.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Cheap days out. Still my favourite way to spend time with my husband</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Dave and I were rather "poor" at the time. We didn't really have much to bring into our new home. He had been living in army accommodation and I had been living in a furnished place for the past year. All my stuff was and actually still is now (5 1/2 years later..ooops) stored in Germany. So at the time we were saving for a house, getting the essentials for our current place AND (how could I forget) we were also planning our wedding for the following year. Dave proposed to me just before we moved to Colchester. This left no £££ for fun and we had to be clever with how to make the most out of an empty purse. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00332-1_zpsc5ab6aa8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC00332-1_zpsc5ab6aa8.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">country walking</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We started walking and hiking all over Essex and Suffolk, brought picnics along and had the best time for free and we were getting fitter. (well I was Dave is and has always been an amazing athlete)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was also still running my little 3-5k loops and decided that maybe I could aim to run a 10k race. I started reading running magazines, found a training plan and learnt a lot about how to train efficiently and also how to fuel myself properly. Until then I used to be a serial dieter buying every fat free diet food product under the sun. I thought I needed to lose weight for some reason or other. I have never been much bigger or much smaller than I am now. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since I first started running, my whole body composition has obviously changed dramatically from my unhealthy, unactive student days until today as have my energy levels. I stopped eating all that processed crap and started eating real whole foods including all their full fat varieties and surprise!!! my running improved, my mood improved and I didn't gain any weight. I also stopped yo yo-ing and generally haven't been ill for the past years. I must be doing something right. If you are interested in further information on the way I eat, research "clean eating"by Tosca Reno and various other resources on that subject. I'm not an expert so I would not want to give any advice on it. It's basically a very common sense approach to nutrition. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Back to the running bit. I ran the my first 10k, finished in just under one hour. I then spend the next three years running on and off for a few months at a time. I usually trained for a few months to prepare for a race followed by a "rest period" that lasted until I booked the next race. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC04716_zps9f11f25c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/DSC04716_zps9f11f25c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">being silly</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then in September 2010 my husband went on tour to Afganistan for just over 6 months. In that time I used running as a tool to keep positive. I was made redundant from my job at the time and started working for myself again. Since I was working from home, spending most of my freetime there as well, running helped me to get outside. It was a tough time for me and I think I needed to prove to myself that I'm a tough cookie that can handle times like that. I did so by wanting to conquer the next distance and run a half marathon. This has never been something I thought I could do but since I wanted to proof something to myself, I had to aim high. But more about that next time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you enjoy reading these non-sewing related posts. I am currently in need of motivation as I am training for my first Triathlon. Looking back down memory lane makes me realise how far I have come in the past 5+ years and that I have accomplished many things I would have never thought I could. It helps pushing myself to the next level. </div>

I never know if everyone is past a new (or better: new to me) TV show already or if there just isn't a lot of hype around it... I don't own a TV so I'm usually behind on everything that's new. If it's not on Iplayer or the other channel's equivalent I usually don't know about it unless I find out about a new show via the blogging community. Anyways I have recently gotten into watching "Hart of Dixie" an American TV show that's been running for two seasons already starring Rachel Bilson. I kinda like Rachel Bilson so I thought I'd check it out and get the DVDs on Lovefilm. When my husband asked me after a few episodes what it was about, I described it as a modern day Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. I think that is a pretty much the whole show in a nutshell. Young Doctor from New York City moves to Bluebell, Alabama to spend some time in a practise as a GP before moving on in her career as a surgeon. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Upon arrival the local people dislikes her immediately and she's struggling to fit in. With every episode and every challenge conquered she wins over the community bit by bit. There are also some possible love interests build in, one she can't have and one she doesn't want.... the usual. It's very easy entertainment and great to watch while doing something else e.g. sewing, knitting.... on the side. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now the main reason I kept watching the show is because it has kind of a Pushing Daisies vibe to me. Some OTT characters, the kind of look/mood of the way it's filmed (I hope I'm making sense here) and the costumes of the women in Bluebell.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My favourite character Lemon Breeland is played by Jamie King. She s basically Betty Draper with a Bree Vandercamp personality. Her costumes are very 1950s housewife-ish and she is the perfect little homemaker with a hidden agenda of course. Gotta keep things interesting, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you haven't already seen the show, go check it out. I recommend it more for costumes and the beautiful setting than the story line.</div>

I indulged in some me-sewing again last week. When we last went to visit my in-laws I purchased some fabric in a local shop and wasn't quite sure what to actually make from it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zpse390d16d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zpse390d16d.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had a selection of vintage shirt dress patterns to choose from and asked on <a href="https://twitter.com/Beatrice_Winter">twitter</a>, and Instagram (@beatricewinter) as well as my personal Facebook which one to use. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zps1e479907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/null_zps1e479907.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The majority went for the top left pattern. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern4882_zps654fdcc2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern4882_zps654fdcc2.jpg" width="444" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The envelope is missing. I believe it's a mail order pattern but I can't seem to be able to find it on Vintage Pattern Wiki or anywhere else. If anyone knows what pattern company it is and from what year, please let me know. I got the pattern a few years ago from <a href="http://invisibleflower.blogspot.co.uk/">Andrea</a> who was so generous to send me a bunch of vintage patterns from her stash. Thanks again Andrea. This is the first time I have made this particular design.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48826_zps99109184.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48826_zps99109184.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here it is. I decided to opt for the sleeves instead of the sleeveless version so I can wear it on bike rides without getting burned on my shoulders. This is a perfect dress for cycling as it's a bit blousy and I won't get too hot in it. At first I wasn't too sure about the big collar but it has grown on me and now I rather like it. Maybe some pipeing along the yoke would be nice to show that detail off would be nice. Next time I would also cut the skirt differently to avoid the center front seam (not too keen on seams all the way down the front) and maybe make a full circle skirt. This four piece skirt also takes a lot of fabric due to the odd cutting layout. It hangs nicely though and the center front seam doesn't show too much. I also shortened the skirt by about 9". I need my skirts to hit just above the knee or slightly below. Any longer and they make my calves look even bigger than they are. Hello running muscles!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48824_zps4b874997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48824_zps4b874997.jpg" width="415" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48825_zpsaba54abf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh301/horrormaedchen/mailorderprintedpattern48825_zpsaba54abf.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And because I like red and went for red buttons, I accessorised with more red today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then hubby and I spend the afternoon in Maidenhead, walking along the Thames</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I hope everyone else has had a nice Saturday. I'm off to bed now (at 9:30 pm on a Saturday night!!!) because I have to get up early to go and spectate at a Sprint triathlon tomorrow. I have never been to watch one live but I want to see what it's like, what to expect and so on so I'm not a complete idiot when I am doing mine in June. I hope I get to learn some tips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyways, have a great weekend everyone. </div>

Any suggestions what pattern from the selection above to try next?</div>
